34Real Estate continuedShe does find it frustrating that everybody in her profession is getting seemingly getting lumped into one category. %u201cIn life in general, we all have bad apples, but the good apples shouldn%u2019t have to suffer because of the bad apples,%u201d she said. That said, she also believes the cataclysmic headlines were overblown.%u201cI have not heard one negative thing other than the lawsuit is huge,%u201d she said. %u201cI haven%u2019t heard anything negative within our circle. It will weed out certain people, and maybe that real estate world was not meant for them. Everybody changes their careers in life.%u201dFor people who keep up with real estate news, this particular news was not shocking.%u201cWe%u2019ve kind of known that this is coming,%u201d Caroline Carrara of Balistreri Real Estate said. %u201cFor the people in the know, they%u2019ve known that this has been coming potentially for three years. So there was already training and conversations and preparation.%u201dThat said, the early days will still be a shock to the system.%u201cInitially it sucks because it changes the whole industry,%u201d Carrara said. %u201cNobody wants to wake up and something you%u2019ve been doing for a long time is suddenly changed. However, being an optimist, I always say if you can%u2019t fix it, you can%u2019t change it, what%u2019s the opportunity here? What%u2019s the good in this?%u201dThe people hurt most, she said, will be first-time home buyers and others who are scraping together the money to buy something at the high end of what they can afford. %u201cNow they are going to have to sign an agreement and agree to pay %u201cNow they are going to have to sign an agreement and agree to pay compensation if that agent is not compensated by the seller.%u201dCarrara can absolutely see one potential scenario that%u2019s been talked about - a world of more bespoke fees based on what consumers want and how much they can spend.%u201cThe wealthy pay for service,%u201d she said. %u201cI actually think in some instances commissions might go up, because agents are picking what their value is.%u201d%u201cI think some agents will command higher commissions because of their value and especially in the luxury market, people want to pay for the best service.%u201dReal estate professionals had better know what their value is - and they%u2019d better have some value. %u201cIt%u2019s going to flush the industry of all the wishy washy realtors,%u201d Carrara said. %u201cIt%u2019s going to clean house because everybody and their mother, especially in Florida, has a license. It%u2019s unfortunate that the threshold to get your real estate license is not that high. There are are just too many realtors who get a license, hang it with a broker and don%u2019t know all the nuances of a person%u2019s biggest investment.%u201dCarrara sees this firsthand; as a broker, she gets plenty of calls from people whose realtors screwed up. If this helps leave the industry to full-time professionals who know their community and the ins and outs of what they%u2019re selling, that will be a positive.%u201cIt%u2019s going to leave the best of the best,%u201d she said. %u201cThey just know everything about the community and to me, that is what a professional realtor is.
